Campaign to Shut Down Auto-Rickshaw Workshops and Charging Stations to Begin Soon

Dhaka, April 26, 2025

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz announced that a joint operation with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will soon be launched to stop battery-powered auto-rickshaws from operating on major roads. The initiative includes shutting down workshops manufacturing auto-rickshaws and their charging stations across the city.
Speaking at the inauguration of road, footpath, and drainage construction projects in Mirpur’s Pallabi area on Saturday (April 26), Ejaz outlined the plan. The projects, covering DNCC’s Wards 6, 7, and 8, involve constructing 20 km of roads, 34 km of drains, and 15 km of footpaths under seven packages.
Ejaz emphasized that the DMP has already compiled a list of auto-rickshaw workshops and charging stations, and operations to close them will commence shortly. He urged residential communities to prevent illegal auto-rickshaws from entering their areas and to refrain from allowing commercial activities, such as auto-rickshaw operations, in planned residential zones. “If local communities work with the city corporation, it will be easier to stop illegal auto-rickshaws and street hawkers,” he added.
Addressing urban planning concerns, Ejaz advised citizens to check mouza maps before purchasing plots from housing companies to ensure they are not located in water bodies, as such plots could lead to legal complications. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve Pallabi’s Eastern Housing area, once known for warehouses and lacking proper infrastructure. The new construction projects aim to enhance connectivity and eliminate waterlogging in the area.
Ejaz called on residents to plant large trees, such as Krishnachura and Sonalu, during the monsoon to transform Eastern Housing into a greener, more livable space. He suggested planting specific tree varieties along different roads to create a visually appealing environment.
The event was attended by DNCC Chief Executive Officer Abu Sayeed Md. Kamruzzaman, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md. Moin Uddin, Additional Chief Engineer Mohammad Arifur Rahman, Regional Executive Officer Md. Ziaur Rahman, Superintending Engineer Khandaker Mahbub Alam, and Dhaka North BNP Convener Aminul Haque, among others.
