Narayanganj, April 28, 2025: Former Law Minister Anisul Huq was assaulted by an angry mob of lawyers and civilians at the Narayanganj court premises on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred as Huq was being escorted out of the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court following a hearing related to the murder case of madrasa student Hafiz Solaiman.
The attack took place amid heightened tensions surrounding the anti-discrimination student and public movement. Huq, who was brought to court from Dhaka Central Jail under tight security, faced a four-day remand order in connection with the case. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had sought a seven-day remand, but the court granted four days for interrogation.
According to court sources, as Huq was being led out of the courtroom, a group of enraged BNP-affiliated lawyers and members of the public chased him, hurling punches and blows. Police quickly intervened, rushing Huq to safety and later transferring him to Narayanganj Jail in a prison van.
The case stems from the killing of 19-year-old Hafiz Solaiman, who was shot dead on August 5, 2024, during protests on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Siddhirganj’s Shimrail area. Solaiman succumbed to his injuries en route to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. On August 22, 2024, Solaiman’s brother-in-law, Shamim Kabir, filed a case at Siddhirganj Police Station, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the prime accused, along with Huq, Awami League leaders Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan, Dipu Moni, Junaid Ahmed Palak, and former MP Shamim Osman, among 51 others.
Police managed to control the situation, ensuring Huq’s safe transfer to jail. The incident highlights the volatile atmosphere surrounding high-profile cases linked to the ongoing movement.
