A massive wildfire has erupted in occupied Jerusalem, marking what authorities describe as the largest natural fire disaster in Israel's history. Sumilik Friedman, Jerusalem Divisional Commander of the Fire and Rescue Department, confirmed the severity of the blaze, warning that controlling it will be a prolonged and challenging task.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (April 30), Friedman stated, “We are in the midst of a massive wildfire, likely the largest in Israel’s history. Our firefighting efforts will continue for an extended period, and we are far from containing the fire.”
The fire reportedly began around 9:30 AM in Mesilat Zion, spreading westward due to strong winds before shifting eastward. Friedman noted that winds could reach speeds of 90 to 100 kilometers per hour by evening, potentially worsening the situation. When asked about the cause of the fire, he admitted, “We have no idea. Truly, no idea.”
According to The Times of Israel, Israel’s internal intelligence agency, Shin Bet, is investigating the fire’s origin, including the possibility of arson. Allegations have surfaced that some individuals may have deliberately contributed to the fire’s spread, and Shin Bet is assisting police in identifying suspects.
As the situation deteriorates, Israel’s Foreign Ministry has requested assistance from Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Italy, and Bulgaria. Firefighting aircraft from Greece and Italy are already en route to Israel. Additionally, Israel’s military chief has ordered troops to assist those affected by the fire.
In a significant development, the Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmoud Abbas, has offered to deploy its firefighters to help combat the blaze.
The wildfire has forced many Israelis to abandon their vehicles and flee, with footage showing flames raging uncontrollably. Authorities continue to grapple with the unprecedented crisis as international support mobilizes to contain the disaster.
