Labor Leader Released on Bail in Sylhet Amid Warm Welcome

Sylhet, April 29, 2025

Zakaria Ahmed, a labor leader accused of attacking protesters during the July Movement, was released on bail from the Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Tuesday afternoon. Arrested the previous night, Zakaria faced charges in five cases related to the attacks in Sylhet city.
Sources reveal that Zakaria, a controversial figure, has also faced criticism for alleged embezzlement within his organization. Despite this, supporters gathered at the court premises from noon, welcoming him with garlands upon his release. A procession was later held by labor activists in the court area.
Zakaria serves as the president of the Sylhet District CNG Auto-Rickshaw Workers’ Union and holds the position of legal affairs secretary in the central committee of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation.
