UIU Forms Three-Member Investigation Committee to Probe Campus Unrest

Dhaka, April 28, 2025

United International University (UIU) has constituted a three-member independent investigation committee to examine the reasons behind the recent student protests and the subsequent resignations of the Vice-Chancellor along with 11 other officials, which have led to operational disruptions at the university.
The decision was announced by the UIU Board of Trustees on Monday, April 28, 2025. The committee has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within seven working days.
The committee is chaired by Professor Md. Mujibur Rahman from the Civil Engineering Department. Dr. Sadid Munir, Associate Professor of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, serves as a member, while Dr. Mohammad Tariq Hasan, Associate Professor of the School of Business and Economics, has been appointed as the member-secretary.
In a statement, the UIU Board of Trustees expressed deep concern over recent incidents on campus and social media. The board emphasized that decisions would be made after verifying allegations, demands, and information circulating in the media. The committee will conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the unrest and related events, collecting relevant evidence and testimonies.
The statement further highlighted UIU’s commitment to contributing to the development of higher education in Bangladesh and ensuring transparency. Based on the committee’s findings, the Board of Trustees will take appropriate measures.
The unrest began when students launched protests, demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Abul Kashem Mia. To suppress the agitation, the university authorities reportedly took steps such as shutting down internet access, which further fueled student discontent. Following intense protests, the Vice-Chancellor announced his resignation, followed by 10 other officials, including deans, department heads, and directors, who also submitted their resignation letters.
The university has been closed indefinitely since Monday due to the resignations and the resulting administrative complexities.
