Savar, Dhaka: Workers of Priyanka Fashion, a garment factory in Ashulia, blocked the DEPZ-Ashulia-Abdullahpur road on Tuesday evening, demanding their overdue salaries. The protest led to severe traffic congestion on the major roadway, disrupting commuters and causing widespread inconvenience.
The demonstration began around 7:30 PM in the Narsinghapur area, where hundreds of agitated workers took to the streets. As of 8:00 PM, when this report was filed, the workers continued their blockade, refusing to disperse until their demands were met.
According to the workers, the factory authorities shut down operations on April 13, promising to clear March’s full salaries and 10 days’ wages for April by Tuesday. However, when the workers arrived at the factory premises, they were reportedly told to leave without receiving their payments. Frustrated by the broken promise, approximately 200 workers blocked the road to press for their dues.
Mohammad Mominul Islam Bhuiya, Superintendent of Ashulia Industrial Police-1, told Dhaka Post, “The workers have blocked the road over unpaid wages. We are engaging with the factory authorities to resolve the issue and address the workers’ grievances.”
The blockade has caused significant disruptions, with vehicles stranded in long queues. Authorities are working to negotiate a resolution to restore normalcy on the road.
