Dhaka, May 7, 2025: Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology at traffic signals along key corridors in the capital to curb noise pollution.
The AI system will identify drivers who honk unnecessarily and bring them under legal penalties as per existing laws.
The initiative was announced by DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz during the launch of a noise pollution control program at Gulshan-2 signal on Wednesday, May 7. Speaking at the event, Ejaz emphasized that public awareness is crucial in combating noise pollution. "Only collective awareness can protect Dhaka from the dangers of noise pollution. Alongside awareness, strict enforcement of laws is essential to control it," he said.
He further highlighted the need to regulate the use of loudspeakers at social and cultural events by imposing time limits and specific sound boundaries to reduce noise pollution. Ejaz noted that excessive noise is particularly harmful to the elderly, the sick, and the general population.
DNCC has also instructed its regional offices to take measures to stop the indiscriminate use of unnecessary loudspeakers. The AI technology, to be installed at major corridor signals, will detect vehicles honking without valid reasons, and violators will face penalties under the law.
The event was attended by Dr. Ahmed Kamruzzaman Majumder, Chairman of the Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies, along with over a hundred volunteers from Green Voice.
