Dhaka, May 29, 2025: Interim Government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus announced that preparations are underway to ensure a free, fair, and credible general election in Bangladesh to uphold justice, equality, freedom, and dignity for its citizens while facilitating a smooth transition to democracy.
Speaking at the "Nikkei Forum: 30th Future of Asia Conference 2025" in Tokyo on Thursday, Professor Yunus highlighted the transformative changes Bangladesh underwent following a student-led uprising last year, which led to his government assuming power. "We are working tirelessly to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of our people," he said, emphasizing the commitment to conducting a transparent election process.
Despite internal challenges, Bangladesh continues to contribute to global peace and security through participation in UN peacekeeping missions and by providing shelter to over a million Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution in Myanmar. Addressing global issues, Yunus noted the displacement caused by climate change, ethical dilemmas posed by technological advancements, rising trade barriers, and growing economic inequality, which threaten global trust.
"Asia, home to over half of humanity, stands at the epicenter of both uncertainty and opportunity," he said, urging Asian nations to collaborate in addressing shared challenges and fostering peace, dialogue, and inclusive growth. He called for a new path to counter division, discontent, and instability, citing recent governance changes in Bangladesh and South Korea as examples.
