High Court Order Upheld: No Animal Markets in Meradia and Aftabnagar Ahead of Eid-ul-Adha

Dhaka, May 21, 2025 – The Chamber Court of the Supreme Court has upheld a High Court order prohibiting the establishment of animal markets in Meradia and Aftabnagar, two densely populated residential areas in Dhaka, ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. The decision comes as a relief to local residents who have long protested against the environmental and logistical issues caused by such markets.

According to a statement from the Bonshree Sammnya Parishad, a local community organization, the High Court had previously issued a stay order against setting up animal markets in these areas. Despite the Dhaka South City Corporation removing Meradia from its list of designated market locations, concerns persisted about attempts by certain groups to establish markets in violation of the court’s directive. The Chamber Court’s ruling reinforces the prohibition, ensuring no cattle markets will be set up in these areas.
During a human chain protest organized by the Bonshree Sammnya Parishad in Meradia Bazaar on Saturday, community leaders voiced their concerns. Shahabuddin Shikdar, president of the organization, highlighted the challenges faced by residents, stating, “Meradia is a densely populated residential area with 680 households. For years, animal markets have caused chaos, blocking home entrances and creating unsanitary conditions for weeks before Eid.”
Residents also expressed frustration over external groups from areas like Shyampur, Badda, and Khilgaon allegedly using political influence to set up markets. “These individuals are not from our community, yet they create disturbances and intimidate locals,” said a speaker at the protest. The community has vowed to resist any attempts to bring cattle into the area, with some residents threatening to use household tools like brooms to prevent such activities.
The decision is expected to ensure a cleaner and more peaceful environment for residents during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha festivities. Authorities have been urged to enforce the court’s order strictly to prevent any violations.
