May 21, 2025 : The death reference file of Hitu Sheikh, the prime accused in the high-profile Magura child rape and murder case, has been submitted to the High Court. The Supreme Court’s Registrar General’s office confirmed this on Wednesday, .
A decision regarding whether the High Court will be instructed to prepare the paperbook for an expedited hearing of the case will be made after the Chief Justice returns from South Africa, sources said.
Earlier, on May 17, Judge M Zahid Hasan of the Magura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced Hitu Sheikh to death. The court acquitted the other three accused—Sajib Sheikh, the brother-in-law of the victim’s sister, his brother Ratul Sheikh, and their mother Jaheda Begum.
Notably, on March 6, an 8-year-old girl was raped while visiting her sister’s in-laws’ house in Niznanduali village, Magura town. She succumbed to her injuries on March 13 while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
