Gaza, 28 May 2025 : Mohammad Sinwar, brother of Hamas’s former top executive and political wing leader Yahya Sinwar, was killed in an Israeli Air Force (IAF) airstrike in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this during a session of the Knesset on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. He stated, “We are reshaping the Middle East, forcing terrorists out of their hideouts and eliminating thousands in Gaza. We have already neutralized Mohammad Deif, Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and now Mohammad Sinwar.”
On October 7, 2023, Hamas fighters launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory, masterminded by Yahya Sinwar, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages to Gaza. In response, Israel initiated a military operation in Gaza, which has continued for the past 19 months. The operation has resulted in approximately 54,000 Palestinian deaths and over 122,000 injuries, with 56% of the casualties being women, children, and civilians.
Yahya Sinwar was killed by Israeli forces in Rafah on October 16, 2024. Following his death, Mohammad Sinwar took over as the leader of Hamas’s Gaza branch. CNN reached out to Hamas for comment, but no spokesperson was willing to respond.
