Dhaka, May 24, 2025 : Employees and officials of the Bangladesh Secretariat staged a protest rally on Saturday morning against the government’s move to amend the Public Service Act, which includes a provision allowing termination of service with an eight-day notice without any investigation. The demonstration was led by multiple employee organizations.
Nurul Islam, president of the Officers-Employees United Council, stated that the amendment process did not consider the opinions of the employees. He highlighted that the proposed law has created fear and uncertainty among workers, as it could lead to job termination even for taking authorized leave.
During the protest, the employees warned of launching tougher programs if the proposed amendment is not withdrawn.
Notably, the government aims to restore discipline by amending the Public Service Act of 2018, incorporating provisions from the repealed Special Act of 1979.
