Two individuals lost their lives due to bites from the highly venomous Russell’s

Kushtia, 28 May, 2025 : Two individuals lost their lives in separate incidents due to bites from the highly venomous Russell’s Viper in Kushtia on Wednesday (May 28). The tragic incidents occurred in the Gobargara area of Daulatpur Upazila and the Char Jagannathpur area of Kumarkhali Upazila.

The deceased have been identified as Kalu (35), son of the late Naharul Islam from Gobargara in Daulatpur Upazila, and Kamruzzaman (50), son of the late Karim Pramanik from Char Jagannathpur in Kumarkhali Upazila.
Medical authorities confirmed that both deaths were caused by bites from the Russell’s Viper, a highly venomous snake.
Riazul, a cousin of Kalu from Gobargara, reported that on Tuesday night around 11:30 PM, Kalu was bitten by a snake while collecting mangoes in a garden near his home. He was immediately admitted to Kushtia General Hospital, where he succumbed to the venom at around 5:45 AM on Wednesday.
In a separate incident, family sources stated that Kamruzzaman from Char Jagannathpur was bitten by a Russell’s Viper around 11:00 AM on Wednesday while working in a banana plantation near his home. He was first taken to Kumarkhali Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Kushtia General Hospital. The attending physician declared him dead at around 12:30 PM.
Dr. Hosain Imam, the residential medical officer at the 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital, confirmed that both individuals died due to snakebites and identified the Russell’s Viper as the cause of the fatalities.
