01 Jun 2025 : A low-pressure system causing continuous rainfall across the country, including Dhaka, has weakened significantly. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall across all eight divisions of the country in the 24 hours starting from 6 PM on Saturday (31 May).
This may lead to landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar, as well as temporary waterlogging in parts of Dhaka and Chattogram cities.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre reports that water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers in the Rangpur division may rise over the next three days, with the Teesta potentially exceeding the danger level. Due to heavy rainfall upstream, rivers in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions may also see rising water levels over the next two days.
Meteorologist Shahanaz Sultana stated that the active southwest monsoon is driving the ongoing rainfall. She noted, “As the monsoon season progresses, intermittent light rain is expected in some areas.” With no significant risk of stormy winds, the warning signals for Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra ports have been lowered.
According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall between 44-88 mm in 24 hours is considered heavy, while rainfall exceeding 88 mm is classified as very heavy.
