Dhaka, June 17, 2025: The recent visit of Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to the United Kingdom was highly successful, according to Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddiqui. However, he acknowledged that the failure to arrange a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the official visit partially lies with the Foreign Ministry.
Addressing a press conference at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday (June 17), Siddiqui responded to journalists’ questions, stating, “The UK High Commissioner had informed us that the visit was upgraded to an official one. We expected a meeting at the prime ministerial level, but it did not materialize at the last moment. Nevertheless, other significant engagements and programs were successfully completed.”
Siddiqui highlighted that the Chief Adviser met with the UK Trade Minister, the Speaker of the House of Lords, and other key figures. Additionally, Dr. Yunus received the Harmony Award and held a private meeting with the King of the United Kingdom, a key highlight of the visit. Significant progress was also made on the issue of recovering laundered money.
He added, “Despite the absence of one meeting, the visit was highly successful. There is no logical reason to strain the friendly and historical ties between the two countries over this issue.”
