Concern Over Telecom Workers’ Abduction, Call for Government Intervention

Dhaka, June 16, 2025: Sarbas Communication Limited has expressed grave concern over the abduction and disappearance of telecom workers in Chattogram and the Hill Tracts, urging the government to intervene promptly for their rescue. In a statement issued on Monday (June 16), the company called for immediate action to address the crisis.

The statement noted that Sarbas Communication Limited has been managing and maintaining mobile towers for Edotco BD, a Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC)-approved tower company, in Chattogram and the three Hill Tracts districts since 2022. These towers facilitate voice calls, data services, mobile banking, and various app-based services for Robi and other telecom operators.
On June 5, around 7 PM, two workers, Mohammad Sumon Islam (32) and Abdur Rahim (36), went missing while working at a Robi tower in the Karnaphuli Bazar area of Lelang Union, Fatikchhari Thana, Chattogram. A general diary was filed at Fatikchhari Thana, but even after 10 days, the workers have not been recovered. Earlier, on April 19, two other workers, Ismail Miah and Abre Marma, were abducted from a Robi tower under Edotco’s management in Manikchhari Upazila, Khagrachhari. Despite informing the Home Ministry, nearby army camps, and local administration, the abducted workers remain unrescued after nearly two months.
These incidents have caused widespread panic and anxiety among the families, relatives, and colleagues of the abducted and missing workers. The recurring abductions within two months have left thousands of telecom workers across Chattogram, the Hill Tracts, and the country feeling deeply insecure. Sarbas Communication stated that failure to resolve these incidents could make it challenging to continue telecom services in Chattogram and the Hill Tracts. The company has urged the Home Adviser and administration to take swift action to rescue the missing and abducted workers in a safe and healthy condition, alleviating the fear and uncertainty among workers and their families.
