International Desk : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Delhi due to an intense heatwave. The alert, effective from Wednesday (June 11), will remain in place until Friday (June 13). Residents have been advised to avoid going outdoors unless absolutely necessary.
According to Indian news outlet NDTV, temperatures across Delhi's weather stations ranged between 40.9°C and 45.0°C on Wednesday. High humidity levels made the heat feel even more intense, with the heat index reaching a concerning 51.9°C. The highest temperature was recorded in Aya Nagar at 45°C in the afternoon, followed by Palam at 44.5°C, Ridge at 43.6°C, Pitampura at 43.5°C, Lodi Road at 43.4°C, Mayur Vihar at 40.9°C, and Safdarjung (the city’s base station) at 43.3°C.
The IMD noted that the heat index fluctuates based on temperature and relative humidity, but India does not officially maintain records for it. Severe heatwave conditions have been observed in Delhi and isolated areas, with critical conditions reported at three weather stations on Wednesday, though only Aya Nagar recorded such conditions on Thursday.
Temperatures are expected to remain high on Thursday (June 12), with a slight decrease possible from Friday (June 13). The IMD bulletin stated that temperatures are three to four degrees Celsius above normal, likely sustaining heatwave conditions until Thursday.
Under the red alert, residents are urged to take urgent measures, including drinking plenty of water, avoiding direct sunlight, and limiting outdoor activities.
