The University of Dhaka (DU) has proposed a budget of BDT 1,035.45 crore for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. However, only BDT 21.57 crore, a mere 2.08% of the total budget, has been allocated for research. This marks a slight increase of approximately BDT 1.5 crore compared to the previous fiscal year (2024-2025), when BDT 20.07 crore was allocated for research.
On Tuesday (June 17, 2025), the proposed budget was presented by the university’s Treasurer, Professor Dr. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. He highlighted that the University Grants Commission (UGC) allocated BDT 883.04 crore, falling short of the university’s demand of BDT 978.04 crore, creating a shortfall in expected funding.
Breaking down the budget, the Treasurer stated that BDT 293.50 crore will be spent on salaries, BDT 215.91 crore on allowances, BDT 285.98 crore on goods and services, BDT 138.86 crore on pensions and retirement benefits, BDT 100 crore on primary healthcare, BDT 35.41 crore on equipment grants, BDT 1.68 crore on vehicles, BDT 4.20 crore on information technology and other capital grants, and BDT 3 crore on other capital expenditures.
The Treasurer noted that the University of Dhaka lacks full autonomy in budget formulation, as it is constrained by the fixed allocations provided by the UGC. This limitation restricts the university’s ability to allocate sufficient funds to critical areas such as research.
