Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, recently undertook a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom starting on June 9. However, during this visit, he did not meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, sparking discussions in diplomatic and political circles. Dr. Yunus addressed this matter in an interview with the BBC.
Responding to a question from BBC journalist Rajini Vaidyanathan, Dr. Yunus expressed that he was keen to meet Starmer but does not view the missed opportunity as a disappointment. He stated, “Perhaps he (Starmer) was busy, or for some other reason, the meeting didn’t happen. But this has created a bigger opportunity for me. Since he was busy, I’m inviting him to visit Bangladesh. We can spend time together, I can show him the situation here, and he can understand the significance of this moment.”
He further elaborated, “This is a special moment in history. We are leaving the past behind and ushering in a new future.” On the missed meeting, Dr. Yunus remarked, “I don’t know if I’m disappointed or if he is. For some reason, an opportunity was missed. That’s why I say he should come to Bangladesh. He can relax here, understand the situation, and grasp the essence of this moment.”
Dr. Yunus returned to Bangladesh on June 14, landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 9:45 AM.
