International Desk, 11 June, 2025 : Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has secretly traveled from the United States to India to meet his mother and celebrate Eid-ul-Adha. Multiple sources from Indian security agencies and senior Awami League leaders based in India have confirmed this to BBC.
According to sources, Joy arrived in India on June 6 and spent time with his mother during Eid. Sheikh Hasina is currently residing in a secure location in Delhi, having left Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, following political unrest. This marks the first meeting between Hasina and her son since her departure.
Though the visit is primarily personal and family-oriented, it has gained significance due to the political context. Joy is not expected to participate in any public events, and his itinerary remains undisclosed.
In Bangladesh, legal proceedings against Sheikh Hasina have begun, with charges of crimes against humanity related to violent incidents in July 2023. The Bangladeshi government has urged India to repatriate Hasina, but New Delhi has not yet taken any formal steps. A court has ordered Hasina to appear by June 16.
Analysts believe this mother-son reunion during Eid and Hasina’s stay in India have added a new dimension to the diplomatic relations between the two countries.
