Heavy Rainfall Forecasted in Bangladesh Until Thursday

Due to a seasonal low-pressure system, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the Khulna, Barishal, and Rajshahi divisions of Bangladesh starting Tuesday, June 17, and continuing until Thursday, June 19, according to Mostafa Kamal Palash, a meteorologist and PhD researcher in weather and climate at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

In a verified Facebook post on Tuesday, Palash stated that a monsoon low-pressure system has formed over the landmasses of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. This system is likely to cause moderate to heavy rainfall across Bangladesh, as well as West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya in India, through Thursday. He highlighted that the districts of Khulna, Barishal, and Rajshahi divisions, along with southern districts of West Bengal, are particularly at risk of heavy rainfall throughout Tuesday.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s (BMD) 120-hour forecast issued on Monday, June 16, signed by meteorologist Afroza Sultana, the low-pressure system extends from West Bengal through southwestern Bangladesh to the northwest Bay of Bengal. The monsoon is active in southern Bangladesh, moderately active elsewhere, and in a moderate state over the northern Bay of Bengal.
The BMD’s forecast for Tuesday, June 17, from 9:00 AM for the next 24 hours indicates that most areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, along with many areas of Rajshahi division, may experience light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds. Some areas could see moderate to very heavy rainfall, with day and night temperatures slightly decreasing.
For Wednesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 19, the forecast predicts similar conditions, with light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers in most areas of the aforementioned divisions, along with the possibility of moderate to very heavy rainfall in some places. Temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
On Friday, June 20, the BMD forecasts continued rainfall, with most areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and many areas in Dhaka and Khulna divisions, likely to experience light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers. Moderate to very heavy rainfall is also possible in some regions, with temperatures remaining nearly stable.
The BMD further noted that the trend of increased rainfall is expected to persist over the next five days. Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious, as low-lying areas may face waterlogging, and agricultural activities could be impacted.
