In Narayanganj’s Rupganj, a former Chhatra Dal leader, Jahidul Islam Babu, was permanently expelled from the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) for breaching organizational discipline after he allegedly opened fire to free a former Chhatra League leader, leading to the death of a Yubadal worker, Mamun Hossain (35). The incident occurred on Tuesday (June 10) afternoon in the Mazhipara area of Bhulta Union, Rupganj.
Incident Details: According to local sources and police, on Tuesday afternoon, locals detained Sabbir Hossain, alias Khoka, a former organizing secretary of Bhulta Union Chhatra League. Yubadal leader Badal Hossain’s supporters were also present. While Sabbir was being taken to Badal’s house, Jahidul Islam Babu, along with his supporters, attacked the group, leading to a clash. During the conflict, Babu allegedly fired indiscriminately, resulting in Mamun Hossain being shot. Mamun, Badal Hossain’s younger brother and a gas cylinder businessman by profession, was hit in the ear.
Mamun was rushed to US Bangla Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 9 PM on Tuesday. A post-mortem report by Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Mahmud Hassan confirmed a bullet wound below Mamun’s left ear.
Chhatra Dal’s Action: On Wednesday (June 11), a press release signed by JCD’s office secretary, Md. Jahangir Alam, announced Babu’s permanent expulsion from the organization’s primary membership for violating discipline. The decision was approved by JCD central president Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir. Party leaders and workers were instructed to sever all organizational ties with Babu.
Legal Measures: Following the incident, Mamun’s family filed a case against Jahidul Islam Babu and 16 others at Rupganj Police Station. The police have launched an investigation, and additional forces have been deployed to the area to maintain order. Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam stated that Sabbir Hossain was a friend of Jahidul, and the latter fired shots to free him. Sabbir, who was beaten by locals, suffered a broken leg and was admitted to the Pangu Hospital.
Funeral and Reactions: Mamun’s funeral prayer was held on Wednesday afternoon in Mazhipara, followed by his burial at Mazhina Graveyard. Leaders and activists from BNP, Yubadal, and Chhatra Dal, along with locals, attended the funeral. Local BNP leaders demanded justice for Mamun’s killing and called for measures to prevent the rehabilitation of Awami League affiliates.
