Intern doctors at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital have called off their indefinite strike, which was initiated to press for three demands. The decision was made following a meeting with the hospital administration on the evening of Monday, June 16, 2025. Additionally, a three-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the issue. The hospital’s principal, Professor Dr. Md. Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury, confirmed the development.
According to reports, the intern doctors began their strike on Sunday night (June 15) to protest against eviction from their residential halls, demand safe and hygienic living conditions, and ensure habitable residential facilities. The strike caused significant disruptions for patients seeking medical care. The intern doctors alleged that on Sunday night, several female interns’ rooms were forcibly entered in their absence, with locks broken and personal belongings removed. Among them was a pregnant intern whose condition became critical. Labeling the incident as inhumane and unlawful, the doctors launched the strike on Monday morning.
Following assurances from the administration, the strike was withdrawn in the evening. A three-member inquiry committee, headed by Professor Dr. Shamim Akter Mim from the Pathology Department, has been formed to probe the incident. The other members are Dr. Rowshan Ara Begum, Head of the Biochemistry Department, and Dr. Tanjina Chowdhury, Assistant Professor of the Pediatrics Department. The principal stated that the committee would submit its report within seven days, after which necessary actions would be taken. He added, “This was a minor misunderstanding. The issue has been resolved through discussions.”
