Dhaka, June 12, 2025 – Veteran actor Samu Chowdhury, a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s television and theater scene during the 1990s, was reportedly found lying on a roadside near Mukhi Shah Miskin Mazar in Gafargaon, Mymensingh, on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Social media posts circulating in various groups raised concerns about his mental health, suggesting he may have lost his balance and was in need of assistance.
According to a report by RTV News, the images and accompanying captions claimed that Chowdhury was lying under a traditional gab tree near the Mazar, prompting calls for his family and loved ones to come forward and assist him. The posts urged people to share the information to ensure the actor could be safely reunited with his family.
Following the viral posts, the Bangladesh Actors’ Association took swift action. Rashed Mamun Apu, General Secretary of the association, clarified that the situation stemmed from a drama shoot. However, he acknowledged that Chowdhury has been facing some mental health challenges, which may have contributed to the incident. The local Pagla Police Station facilitated his rescue from the location, and he was taken into safe custody. A team from Dhaka has been dispatched to bring him back to the capital for medical treatment as soon as possible.
Samu Chowdhury, a beloved figure in Bangladeshi theater, television, and cinema, gained fame with his debut in the TV drama Samriddho Asim, which aired on BTV on March 22, 1990. Produced by Atikul Haque Chowdhury, the drama earned him a modest fee of BDT 700. After a hiatus from acting due to personal reasons, during which he retreated to his village in Jashore, Chowdhury returned to the industry through the efforts of the Shilpi Aikyya Jot and has been working regularly since.
The Actors’ Association is now focused on ensuring Chowdhury receives proper medical care and support. Further updates on his condition are awaited.
