A high-level delegation from Bangladesh will travel to the United States tomorrow to participate in the third round of negotiations aimed at reducing additional tariffs imposed on Bangladeshi exports to the American market. The talks are scheduled to take place on July 29 and 30, 2025, in Washington, DC.
Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman informed journalists at the Secretariat on Sunday that the delegation includes National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, and Additional Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Dr. Nazneen Kawshar Chowdhury. The delegation is set to depart Dhaka for the United States on Monday afternoon.
The discussions with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) are critical for Bangladesh’s export-dependent economy, particularly the garment sector, which faces a looming 35% reciprocal tariff set to take effect on August 1, 2025. The tariff was reduced from an initially proposed 37% following two previous rounds of negotiations, but progress has been limited so far. The delegation aims to secure a more favorable tariff structure to maintain Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the US market, its largest export destination.
