The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized 31 gold bars, valued at approximately BDT 60 million, which were being smuggled into India through the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah.
The seizure took place in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, in the Kumillapara border area of Maheshpur, where the gold bars were found abandoned. This information was confirmed in a press release signed by Abu Hanif Md. Sihanuk, Deputy Commander and Additional Director of the Maheshpur Battalion.
According to the press release from Maheshpur Battalion (58 BGB), a patrol team from Kumillapara Border Outpost (BOP), acting on a tip-off, spotted a suspicious individual near Main Pillar 60/70-R. The individual was attempting to cross into India from Bangladesh. When challenged, the suspect fled towards India in the rain, abandoning three bundles. The bundles were later recovered and taken to Kumillapara BOP, where they were found to contain 31 gold bars weighing a total of 4 kilograms and 203.11 grams. The BGB estimated the market value of the seized gold at BDT 58.3 million (5 crore 83 lakh 3 thousand 618 taka).
The press release further stated that a General Diary (GD) entry has been filed at Maheshpur Police Station regarding the seized gold. A seizure list has been prepared, and the gold is in the process of being deposited at the Jhenaidah District Treasury.
Although no arrests were made in connection with this incident, efforts are underway to identify the smuggling syndicate involved. Lieutenant Colonel Rafiqul Alam, Commander of Maheshpur 58 BGB, stated that surveillance has been intensified along the border, and regular operations are being conducted to combat smuggling activities.
