The Secretary-General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), Indra Mani Pandey, stated that BIMSTEC is actively working to address security challenges that hinder the developmental aspirations of its member states.
Speaking at an interaction session with members of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the BIMSTEC headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday (July 22), the Secretary-General emphasized this commitment.
Pandey said, "Regarding whether we are focusing more on security, I would like to reiterate that our primary focus is on implementing the sustainable development goals of our member states. In that context, we are also addressing security challenges that impact the developmental aspirations of our members."
He added that BIMSTEC member countries are keen to use the organization as a regional platform to share and address their security concerns. "Security is one of the areas of our agenda," he noted.
The Secretary-General further elaborated that BIMSTEC is tackling issues such as human trafficking, drug trafficking, cybersecurity challenges, and maritime security challenges. "If these challenges are not addressed, they will impact the development of member states. Therefore, member states have identified these security aspects for cooperation among themselves," he said.
