Clashes Over Mosque Veranda Construction in Bera, Section 144 Imposed

In Bera Upazila of Pabna, repeated clashes have erupted over the construction of a veranda for a mosque. On Saturday, July 26, 2025, following the death of an injured person from the conflict, at least 20 houses were vandalized, set on fire, and looted.

To prevent further unrest, the local administration imposed Section 144 in the affected area. On Sunday, July 27, 2025, Bera Upazila Executive Officer Md. Morshedul Islam issued an order confirming the imposition. Police and military patrols have been intensified in the area.

The order stated that in Tarapur village under Chakla Union of Bera Upazila, clashes involving homemade weapons, arson, stone-throwing, and weapon displays occurred due to the construction of a veranda for a new mosque. Reports from the Bera Police Station indicate a risk of further violent clashes. Consequently, Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, was imposed from 10 AM on July 27 to 10 AM on July 28, 2025. During this period, carrying or displaying firearms and sticks, using loudspeakers or sound devices, gatherings or movement of five or more people, and any form of meetings, assemblies, or processions are prohibited. A few years ago, a dispute arose in Bera Upazila over the recitation of Qiyam during a Milad Mahfil at an old mosque. One group, including the then mosque cashier Matin, supported Qiyam and proceeded to build a new mosque. Recently, efforts were made to construct a veranda for this new mosque. However, another group in the same village objected to having two mosques. On Friday, July 25, 2025, when construction of the veranda began, the opposing group obstructed it, leading to a clash involving 200–250 people from both sides wielding sickles, machetes, and sticks. Police intervened to control the situation, but at least 30 people from both sides were injured. On Saturday, July 26, following the death of an individual named Hadis, 20 houses in the area were vandalized, looted, and set on fire.
