Extortion at Former MP’s Residence in Gulshan: Anti-Discrimination Leader Among Five Arrested

Police have detained five individuals, including a leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, in connection with an extortion case at the residence of former reserved seat MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan.

The arrests were made on Saturday at Shammi Ahmed’s house located at Road No. 83, Gulshan-2. The detained individuals are identified as Md. Siam, Sadman Sadab, Md. Aminul Islam, Ibrahim Hossain, and Abdur Razzaq Riyad.

According to Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Hafizur Rahman, the group, led by coordinator Riyad, was apprehended while attempting to extort money from Shammi Ahmed. They had previously demanded Tk 1 crore and had already taken Tk 10 lakh. On Saturday, they returned to demand the remaining amount, prompting police to intervene and arrest them.

Police sources revealed that Abdur Razzaq Riyad is the acting convener of the combined private university wing of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a member of the Bangladesh Democratic Student Council. The others are activists associated with the movement at various levels.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) of DMP’s Gulshan Zone, Ali Ahmed Masud, stated that during interrogation, Riyad claimed he visited Shammi Ahmed’s residence four to five days ago to confront her. At that time, Shammi Ahmed’s husband allegedly offered them money, saying, “You are like my sons. Let me entertain you, but don’t take my wife.” Riyad reportedly received Tk 5 lakh, which was handed over to Jane Alam Apu, joint convener of the Bangladesh Democratic Student Movement. The money was allegedly used for Apu’s pregnant wife’s medical expenses and to purchase a motorcycle. The group returned on Saturday to collect the remaining amount.

Sources confirmed that on July 17, Riyad, posing as a coordinator, visited Shammi Ahmed’s residence and demanded Tk 1 crore, threatening to label her a “fascist collaborator” and hand her over to the police if she refused. They collected Tk 10 lakh at the time. A video of the transaction, showing two youths receiving money in a guest room, went viral on social media. Gulshan police confirmed the video was recorded at Shammi Ahmed’s residence on Road No. 83.
