Starlink Service Disrupted Globally, Elon Musk Apologizes

On Thursday (July 25), Starlink, the satellite-based internet service owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, faced a significant outage. The disruption, lasting approximately two and a half hours, affected thousands of users across various regions worldwide, leaving them without internet connectivity. Both Elon Musk and senior Starlink officials have issued apologies for the inconvenience.

Michael Nicolls, Vice President of Starlink’s Engineering Department, stated that the outage began at 3:00 PM local time on the U.S. East Coast. According to internet monitoring firm Downdetector, over 61,000 users reported issues during this period.

In a post on X, Nicolls explained that the outage was caused by a failure in the internal software responsible for managing the core network. “We are sorry for the inconvenience. We are actively working to identify the root cause and ensure such an issue does not recur,” he said. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also expressed regret on X, stating, “We apologize for the disruption. We have identified the root cause and will implement a permanent fix.”
Starlink, which currently serves over 6 million users in approximately 140 countries and regions with high-speed internet, has launched more than 8,000 satellites since 2020. These satellites operate in low Earth orbit, forming a robust and expansive network.
