Workers of RAK Ceramics factory in Gazipur’s Sreepur have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, demanding unpaid salaries and a 10-point list of demands. The protest led to clashes with the police when they attempted to intervene.
On Sunday (July 27), around 7:00 AM, hundreds of factory workers began their demonstration in the Jaina Bazar area of Gazipur Union, Sreepur Upazila. As of 9:15 AM, when this report was being written, the protest and intermittent clashes continued, causing significant traffic jams on both sides of the highway.
Eyewitnesses reported that when law enforcement attempted to clear the highway, workers engaged in a chase and counter-chase with the police. To disperse the protesters, police used tear gas and sound grenades.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abdul Barik said, “Upon receiving the news, a large number of personnel from the thana and industrial police arrived at the scene and tried to persuade the workers to leave. However, the workers began throwing bricks at the police, prompting the use of tear gas and sound grenades to disperse them.”
