A 22-year-old woman was gang-raped in Tangail after mistakenly boarding a train bound for northern Bangladesh instead of her intended destination. The incident occurred late Friday night (July 25, 2025) near the Gharinda railway station in Tangail. On Saturday morning (July 26, 2025), police arrested three suspects, all of whom are CNG auto-rickshaw drivers.
The arrested individuals are Dulal Chandra Das (28), son of Sentu Chandra Das, Sajib Khan (19), son of Abdul Halim Khan, and Rupu Mia (27), son of the late Kismat Mia, all residents of Brahmankushia Sutar Para village in Tangail Sadar Upazila.
According to police, the victim, from Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria, had come to Dhaka for work. On Friday night, she arrived at Dhaka’s Airport Railway Station intending to return to Brahmanbaria but mistakenly boarded the northbound Drutayan Express. She fell asleep during the journey and, upon waking, learned from other passengers that she was on the wrong train. She disembarked at Tangail’s Gharinda Railway Station around 12:30 AM and informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) about her situation. A GRP officer instructed a local CNG driver, Dulal, to help her board a train back to Dhaka. Meanwhile, police were called away to attend to an accident in Kalihati Upazila’s Salla area. Taking advantage of the situation, Dulal, along with his accomplices Rupu and Sajib, lured the woman to a nearby woodlot beside the station, where Dulal raped her. Later, they took her to Rupu Mia’s house in Brahmankushia village, where Rupu and Sajib also raped her.
Police further stated that around 2:30 AM, the perpetrators left the victim at the railway station and fled. The woman then reported the incident to the railway police, who rescued her and informed Tangail Sadar Police Station. On Saturday morning, police conducted a raid and arrested the three suspects from their homes. The victim filed a case against them at Tangail Sadar Police Station.
Harun Ur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Gharinda Railway Police Outpost, said, “After being informed of the incident, we notified the thana police, and with our assistance, they arrested the three suspects.”
Tangail Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanvir Ahmed confirmed, “We received the complaint and have arrested the suspects, who have been sent to Tangail court. The victim has been sent to Tangail Medical College Hospital for a medical examination.”
