76 Bhori Gold Seized, 3 Arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport

Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport saw the seizure of 887.5 grams (approximately 76 bhori) of gold in three separate operations conducted by the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) on Sunday, August 17, 2025. Three individuals suspected of involvement in gold smuggling were detained during these operations.

According to a press release issued by the APBn, the first operation took place at 9:20 a.m. at the departure and arrival terminal roundabout, where 293.5 grams of gold ornaments (valued at approximately Tk36.1 lakh) were recovered from Md. Saleh Faisal (27). In a second operation at 1:45 p.m., 395 grams of gold ornaments (valued at around Tk46.21 lakh) were seized from Monirul Islam (34) near the media corner of the arrival terminal. In a third operation at 10:20 a.m., Masum Rana (32) was detained at the arrival terminal with 199 grams of gold ornaments.

The detained individuals were handed over to the airport’s Executive Magistrate Court for legal action. Preliminary interrogations revealed that they were part of an organized syndicate involved in smuggling gold through incoming passengers to evade customs duties, acting as receivers in Bangladesh. APBn’s Operational Commander, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mozammel Haque, stated, “We remain vigilant in preventing smuggling and crime at the airport. The Airport Armed Police maintains a strict stance to curb gold smuggling.”
