Afridi’s Father Arrested in Murder Case! When Will Afridi’s Turn Come?

In July 2024, amidst relentless gunfire and attempts to conceal bodies by the fascist Hasina-led law enforcement, nearly 1,500 innocent, unarmed students and civilians were killed while peacefully protesting for quota reforms. During this time, Touhid Afridi, a so-called YouTuber who gained cheap popularity through his father’s illicit wealth, actively supported the murderous Hasina regime, shaking social media with his actions.

Ending all speculation, Afridi’s father, Nasir Uddin Sathi, Chairman of the private television channel MyTV, has finally been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the police. Now, questions are swirling everywhere: when will Afridi, an accused in a murder case, be arrested? This is the same Afridi who, during the uprising, allegedly coerced YouTubers through intimidation and threats to create videos in favor of Hasina and the banned Awami League, using crores of taka to lure influencers to the court of the killer Hasina.

Additionally, Afridi faces numerous allegations of violence against women and sexual harassment. He is an accused in multiple murder cases linked to the July uprising, as well as various fraud cases, branding him a deceitful figure in human guise. Recently, some influencers and activists have claimed that Afridi was behind the sudden wave of pro-Mujib posts and expressions of grief on social media surrounding Sheikh Mujib’s birthday on August 15. They allege that, just like in 2024, Afridi took on the role of managing celebrities with illicit funds from Hasina to work in favor of the banned Awami League. He reportedly pressured and paid top-tier celebrities to post pro-Mujib content and orchestrated mourning campaigns, even supervising the creation of tailored posters for each celebrity to avoid repetition. On Sunday afternoon, a special DB team detained Afridi’s father from Gulshan. He is currently being held at the DB office on Minto Road. DB Joint Commissioner Nasirul Islam confirmed that Nasir Uddin was named in the “Asad murder” case filed at jatrabari police station by the victim’s father, Md. Joynal Abedin. Not only Nasir Uddin but also his son, Touhid Afridi, is accused in this case, listed as the 11th accused. The case names 25 individuals, including fascist Hasina (1st accused), former Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader (2nd accused), and former IGP Abdullah Al Mamun (3rd accused), a collaborator of the autocrat. Following this arrest, Afridi has become the center of public discourse. The “July Revolutionary Alliance (JRA)” has issued a 26-hour ultimatum to the government to arrest him. In a Facebook post on Sunday, the JRA stated, “Touhid Afridi is still in Bangladesh. No drama—arrest him immediately.” Speculation abounds about Afridi’s current whereabouts and whether he is in hiding. However, a recent photo shared in the JRA’s post suggests he remains in the country. The question now is whether, after his father, Afridi will also fall into the hands of law enforcement, or if he will remain beyond their reach even after the ultimatum expires.
