Army Deployed at Chittagong University After Section 144 Imposed

Chittagong, August 31, 2025: Following clashes between students of Chittagong University (CU) and local residents, Section 144 has been imposed to bring the situation under control. Joint forces, including police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and army personnel, have been deployed in the affected areas.

On Sunday (August 31) at around 3:45 PM, security forces took positions at the site of the unrest. Earlier, Hathazari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin issued the order for Section 144.

The order states that from 2:00 PM on Sunday to 12:00 AM on Monday, Section 144 will remain in effect in and around Chittagong University. During this period, all gatherings, protests, rallies, possession of explosives, firearms, and any locally made weapons, as well as the assembly or movement of five or more people, are strictly prohibited in the designated areas. The conflict began on Saturday night when a female student was allegedly assaulted by a security guard for returning home late, sparking tensions. That night, multiple rounds of chases and counter-chases, along with brick-throwing, left many students injured. At least 20 students were sent to Chittagong Medical College (CMC) for treatment, and two teachers from the university’s proctorial body were also injured. On Sunday morning, fresh clashes erupted between students and local residents. During the unrest, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin, fell ill after being chased by locals. Following the clashes, Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin announced the suspension of all university examinations on Sunday. However, classes and the shuttle train service will continue as per the regular schedule.
