Australia to Recognize Palestine as a State Next Month**

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

Despite sharp criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Australia has announced it will formally recognize Palestine as a state during the United Nations General Assembly session next month.

On Monday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement in Canberra, stating that a two-state solution is the best hope for humanity to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East.

The Australian government emphasized that this decision is part of a "coordinated global effort" to establish peace. However, it clarified that the future Palestinian state will have no role for Hamas. Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that this recognition provides the international community with an opportunity to "create hope amidst despair." Australia’s move aligns with recent positions taken by the United Kingdom, Canada, and France, which have also accelerated their processes to recognize Palestine. New Zealand is reportedly considering a similar step. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, known for his hardline stance, strongly criticized Australia’s decision, calling it "shameful" and claiming it would fuel conflict rather than promote peace. Australia’s opposition party and the Zionist Federation have also criticized the government’s decision, arguing that it would encourage Hamas.
While most countries worldwide have already recognized Palestine as a state, many Western democracies had refrained from doing so until recently.
