In Kochi, Kerala, bank employees staged a unique protest by organizing a beef party in front of their bank after the deputy regional manager banned beef in the bank’s canteen. According to NDTV, the protest took place on Thursday, where employees cooked and ate beef with parotta, a traditional Kerala dish.
The issue arose after Ashwini Kumar, a recently appointed deputy regional manager from Bihar, took charge of the Canara Bank branch and imposed a ban on beef in the canteen. Employees also alleged that he was harassing them in various ways. One bank employee told NDTV that they initially planned a protest against the harassment but changed their approach upon learning about the beef ban.
A leader from the Indian Bank Employees Federation stated, “Food is a personal choice, and this right is protected by the Constitution. Yet, the new officer interfered with the employees’ food choices.” The bank’s central authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
Kerala’s political leaders have supported the employees’ unconventional protest. Independent MLA KT Jaleel condemned the officer’s decision, saying, “Senior officials should not dictate what people wear, eat, or think. There will be no BJP-RSS scandals in Kerala.” In a Facebook post, the Communist leader added, “Kerala’s soil is red. Let us speak and protest against fascists without raising red flags. When Communists unite, no one will be allowed to fly saffron flags or harass others.”
Beef is an integral part of Kerala’s culture. In 2017, when the central government banned the sale of cattle for slaughter, Kerala defied the restriction.
