Students from the Faculty of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have confined the university’s Vice-Chancellor along with over 200 teachers, demanding a ‘combined degree’ for their programs. The confinement occurred following an Academic Council meeting that failed to deliver the students’ desired decision.
On Sunday (August 31), around 1:00 PM, protesting students locked the teachers inside the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium at the university. As of the latest update at 6:00 PM, the teachers remained confined.
The issue stems from an emergency Academic Council meeting held at 11:00 AM in the same auditorium to address the combined degree issue. Students from the two faculties began gathering around the auditorium from 9:00 AM, demanding “one profession, one degree – a combined degree.” When the Academic Council’s decision did not meet their expectations by 1:30 PM, the agitated students confined approximately 227 teachers, including the Vice-Chancellor, by locking the auditorium.
The Academic Council decided to retain three separate degrees: BSc in Animal Husbandry, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and a combined degree for the two faculties. Despite the long-standing protests by students, this decision was made. However, the students rejected the three-degree system, insisting on a single combined degree for their profession. As a result, they have kept the teachers confined since 11:00 AM, and the situation persisted at the time of this report.
A student from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Atiq, said, “We have repeatedly demanded one degree for one profession. However, the Academic Council decided to keep three separate degrees, which undermines the core purpose of our movement. We want the combined degree to be recognized as a single degree. Otherwise, it will create confusion in our professional lives. We will continue our protests until our demands are met.”
