BUET Students Block Shahbagh Intersection with Three-Point Demands*

Dhaka, August 26, 2025: Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, pressing for their three-point demands. The protest, which began around 3:45 PM, caused a severe traffic jam as vehicular movement remained suspended for several hours, according to Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur.

The students, under their "Blockade of Engineers" program, brought out a procession and occupied the intersection. They had previously boycotted classes and examinations to support their demands. The protest was ongoing until at least 5:10 PM, as reported by on-site journalists. **The students' demands are:** 1. Recruitment for 9th-grade positions (assistant engineer or equivalent) must be based on competitive examinations, with a minimum qualification of a BSc in engineering. 2. No promotions through quotas or by creating equivalent positions under different titles. 3. The 100% quota for diploma holders in 10th-grade positions (sub-assistant engineer or equivalent) should be abolished. The minimum qualification should remain a diploma in engineering, but BSc and MSc degree holders should also be eligible to apply. Additionally, strict legal measures should be enforced against individuals using the title "engineer" without a BSc in engineering degree. The students vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met.
