Chief Adviser’s Malaysia Visit to Strengthen Dhaka-Kuala Lumpur Ties

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam described Prof Muhammad Yunus’ three-day official visit to Malaysia, starting August 11, 2025, as a “very crucial and important” step toward elevating bilateral relations between Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur. Speaking at a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Alam called the visit “action-packed” and expressed optimism about its success, with discussions planned on a wide range of issues.

Key focuses include migration, investment, and labor recruitment, as Malaysia remains a major destination for Bangladeshi workers. Alam emphasized that recruitment and visa-related matters will receive special attention. Bangladesh will also seek cooperation in deep-sea fishing and electric vehicle manufacturing through joint ventures.

Director General (Public Diplomacy) Shah Asif Rahman announced that five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed in areas such as defense, energy, formation of Business Councils (FBCCI and NCCIM), cooperation between the Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) and Malaysia’s MIMOS, and collaboration between the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) and Malaysia’s Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS). Additionally, three notes of cooperation on the halal ecosystem, higher education, and diplomatic training are likely to be exchanged. The visit will also highlight Bangladesh’s bid to become a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN and join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), alongside urging Malaysia and other ASEAN nations to play a proactive role in resolving the Rohingya crisis. Prof Yunus will meet Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on August 12 for high-level talks aimed at achieving tangible outcomes in trade, investment, and labor cooperation. Accompanying him are Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, Expatriates’ Welfare Adviser Asif Nazrul, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan, National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman, Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi, BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, and Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam. On Tuesday, Yunus will receive a ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra, inspect a guard of honor, and participate in delegation-level talks, followed by a joint press conference. The Malaysian Prime Minister will host an official lunch in his honor. Yunus will also attend a business forum organized by the Bangladesh High Commission, BIDA, and Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry, where the Bangladesh-Malaysia Joint Business Council will be announced. On Wednesday, Yunus will visit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), where he will be honored with an academic gown. Separate meetings are planned for Bangladeshi officials with Malaysian counterparts on energy, human resources, fisheries, and sports. Yunus is scheduled to return to Dhaka on Wednesday night. This visit follows Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s trip to Bangladesh in October 2024, the first by a foreign head of government since the interim government took office.[
