Chittagong, August 31, 2025: Overwhelmed by the administration’s inability to protect students during violent attacks, Professor Dr. Kamal Uddin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of Chittagong University (CU), broke down in tears in front of journalists.
On Sunday around 3:00 PM, at the ground floor of CU’s Medical Center, a visibly emotional Dr. Kamal Uddin told reporters, “They have beaten our teachers and students. We can’t provide enough space in the medical center. We’ve sent 4-5 vehicles to Chittagong Medical College, where over 500 students are injured.”
He further lamented, “What kind of world are we living in? Big cadres of Chhatra League are entering the campus wearing helmets and assaulting students. There’s no police, no support. We’ve spoken to the Chief of Staff, the Home Adviser, and the Chief Adviser’s office, but two hours have passed, and no one has arrived.”
The unrest began on Saturday night when a female student was allegedly assaulted by a security guard, sparking tensions between students and local residents. Reports indicate that at least 150 students have been injured so far.
While attempting to resolve the situation on Sunday, Dr. Kamal Uddin fell ill after being chased by locals. Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif was brought to the medical center in critical condition, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Shamim Uddin Khan was also reported injured.
Eyewitnesses claimed that students were attacked with machetes, and some were beaten after their hostel doors were broken down. A video circulating on social media shows a student being thrown off a building’s roof after being assaulted.
When contacted, Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Kawser disconnected the call.
