According to university sources, a section of Chhatra Dal activists has been protesting, alleging that the 370-member extended committee of the JU Chhatra Dal and the 88-member hall committees include individuals accused in murder cases, members of Chhatra League, and snatchers. Demanding the dissolution of these committees, the agitating group issued a 30-minute ultimatum to the Chhatra Dal convener, Jahir Uddin Babar, and member secretary, Wasim Ahmed Anik, to cancel the hall committees. They also threatened that the duo must leave the campus if their demands were not met. However, when no decision was reached within the stipulated time, a physical altercation and heated exchanges ensued between the two factions. The situation was eventually normalized in the presence of the university’s proctor, Professor AKM Rashidul Islam, who proposed that both sides sit for discussions.
The agitating leaders and activists stated, “Our demand is clear: the committee must be dissolved. If they promise to cancel the hall committees, we will temporarily halt our movement in light of the upcoming Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s student union election (JACSU) and work for the Chhatra Dal panel. Otherwise, we are not willing to engage in any discussions.”
Jahir Uddin Babar, the convener of the JU Chhatra Dal, remarked, “A certain group is trying to tarnish the image of Chhatra Dal ahead of JACSU. In a large committee like this, mistakes can happen, but these can be resolved through dialogue. We will sit for discussions with both sides on Tuesday (August 19) in the presence of several teachers from the Nationalist Teachers’ Forum to address the committee issue.”
Earlier, on Sunday afternoon, another clash and verbal altercation occurred in the cafeteria area between the two factions in the presence of Chhatra Dal’s central general secretary, Nasir Uddin Nasir, and senior vice-president, Abu Afsan Yahya.
