Cloudbursts and Landslides Disrupt Life in Jammu-Kashmir, Schools Ordered Closed

Heavy rainfall and landslides have severely disrupted life in Jammu and Kashmir, India. In response, the administration has ordered the closure of all government and private educational institutions in Jammu on Monday, August 18, to ensure public safety.

According to the administration and the weather department, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, cloudbursts, and the risk of flash floods are expected to continue until Tuesday, August 19. The public has been advised to remain vigilant, and evacuation efforts are underway to move residents from high-risk areas to safer locations.

Over the past four days, three devastating cloudburst incidents have occurred in Kishtwar and Kathua districts. In Kishtwar’s Chinsoti village, heavy rainfall has claimed 68 lives so far, with most victims being pilgrims heading to the Machail Mata temple. Additionally, 82 people remain missing, and at least 116 have been injured. The administration has directed the army, NDRF, and local authorities to work together on rescue operations. Residents of vulnerable hilly areas are being relocated to safer zones. The weather department has issued a special bulletin warning of cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods in multiple districts, including Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban. Similar alerts have been issued for parts of the Kashmir Valley.
Despite active efforts by the administration and rescue teams, the public has been urged to stay cautious and avoid high-risk areas. If the storm and rainfall situation is not brought under control soon, there is a risk of further devastation.
