Election Commission Holds Meeting to Plan for 13th Parliamentary Election

Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) convened a meeting on Thursday (August 21, 2025) at 2:30 PM at the Election Bhavan in Agargaon to discuss preparations for the upcoming 13th parliamentary election. The meeting included four election commissioners and EC Secretariat officials. However, the Chief Election Commissioner was absent due to prior commitments, and EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed is currently in Japan.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah stated, “We have started the meeting to discuss our work plan. Given the number of issues, it may not conclude today. If needed, we will continue until Sunday or Monday.”

He added, “After discussions with the election commissioners and officials, we will brief the Chief Election Commissioner on the progress. The final plan will be announced thereafter.” The Chief Adviser has announced that the 13th parliamentary election will take place in early February 2026, before Ramadan, and a letter regarding this has been sent to the EC. The Chief Election Commissioner has also indicated that the election schedule will be announced approximately two months prior, likely in early December 2025. Following the power transition after a mass uprising, the AMM Nasir Uddin-led Election Commission assumed office in November 2024. The other commissioners are Abdur Rahman Masud, Tahmina Ahmed, Md. Anwarul Islam Sarker, and Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah. Akhtar Ahmed serves as the EC Secretary. Amid ongoing electoral system reforms and the work of the National Consensus Commission, the EC is moving forward with its plans for the 13th parliamentary election. As part of these efforts, the voter list was updated in early 2025, with the total number of voters exceeding 12.37 crore. Other related activities are also progressing steadily.
