EU to Provide Over €4 Million in Support to Bangladesh Election Commission

During a press conference, EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller announced that the European Union (EU) will provide a support package worth over €4 million to the Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh. The assistance aims to facilitate the organization of an international-standard election in the country.

On Tuesday (August 19), a six-member EU delegation met with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and confirmed the support package, as verified by Ambassador Miller to the media.

Miller stated that the EU is working as a partner to support Bangladesh’s transition to democratic elections. The focus will be on "voter education" while also providing direct assistance to enhance the EC’s capacity through expert support in areas such as effective planning and dispute resolution. He further mentioned that the EU is prioritizing the possibility of sending an election observation mission for Bangladesh’s upcoming elections. Discussions on this matter will continue with the interim government and the EC in the coming days. **British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke Meets Chief Justice** Ambassador Miller also noted that the EU delegation included colleagues from the European Partnership for Democracy, who are election experts. Their presence aims to emphasize civic observation in the upcoming elections. The EU’s goal is to ensure that Bangladesh’s election process upholds independence, efficiency, and accountability.
In response to a question, Miller revealed that a technical expert team from the EU will visit Bangladesh next month. This will not be a full-fledged observation mission but will assess whether the environment is conducive to deploying an election observation mission.
