Germany Halts Arms Exports to Israel Over Potential Use in Gaza

Germany has announced a temporary suspension of arms exports to Israel, particularly for weapons that could be used in Gaza, until further decisions are made. This was reported by Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera on Friday, August 8, 2025.

In a statement, German Chancellor Friedrich März acknowledged Israel's right to self-defense but emphasized that securing the release of hostages and achieving a ceasefire are top priorities. The statement noted that the Israeli cabinet decided last night to intensify military actions in the Gaza Strip, making it increasingly challenging for Germany to support these objectives.

The statement further clarified that, in light of the situation, Germany is halting arms exports that could be used in Gaza. Meanwhile, Australia has expressed dissatisfaction with Israel’s plans to occupy Gaza. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated, “For the sake of humanity, Netanyahu should refrain from the decision to occupy Gaza.” China also strongly criticized Israel’s decision to occupy Gaza on Friday. A spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, “Gaza is an inseparable part of Palestine.”
