Government Must Take Responsibility for Attack on Nur: Adviser Asif

Dhaka, August 31, 2025 – Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has stated that the interim government cannot evade responsibility for the recent attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, who was injured by joint forces on Friday. Speaking to reporters on Sunday afternoon outside the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital after visiting Nur, Adviser Asif condemned the incident.

“This was not an attack on an ordinary worker – it was an attack on the head of a political party,” Asif said. “Even during the Awami League’s tenure, such a brutal attack did not occur. Unfortunately, it has happened under the current government.” He emphasized that the interim government must take accountability, regardless of who orchestrated the attack, and ensure such incidents are not repeated. “A proper investigation and trial must be conducted,” he added.

Addressing allegations from Nur’s party against the army, Asif revealed that the government is considering forming a strong investigation committee to probe the matter. Responding to claims of mob violence, he remarked, “We need to distinguish between a mob and a political program. How can a political party form a mob? From what I know, it was the Jatiya Party that attacked first.” Asif accused the Jatiya Party of strategically labeling Nur’s group as a mob to favor the Awami League’s return. He described Nur as a key national leader in the July Movement, stating that such a vicious attack on him is unacceptable. Commenting on Nur’s condition, Asif noted, “He has injuries on his nose and several parts of his face.” He assured that the government has arranged for Nur’s treatment and, if necessary, will facilitate advanced care abroad.
