On August 15, while paying tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, actor Arsh Khan was labeled a "cultural fascist" by a group of Dhaka University students who threw shoes at his image.
In response to the incident, Arsh Khan posted a status on his Facebook, stating, "There is no greater sin in this country than being an ordinary citizen."
In his post, Arsh elaborated, "Last year, workers from one group harassed me online. This year, another group welcomed me with shoes. Relationships change in the blink of an eye."
Arsh expressed frustration about his upbringing, education, and the influence of the political environment. He wrote, "I was born on February 2, 1993. During my school years, my birth date was changed to make it easier to secure a government job. Later, I learned about relationships, religion, and history. But in my 23 years of education, I saw only governments changing, books changing, and history changing. In my country, the responsibility for not knowing history doesn’t lie solely with me—it lies with the education board, schools, colleges, and universities."
He further noted, "In our country, billions of taka are spent renaming places. When in power, everyone is good; when out of power, they’re bad. This is how our lives are controlled."
Referring to last year’s harassment by a political group’s workers for supporting students, Arsh wrote, "Last year, one group’s workers harassed me online. This year, another group welcomed me with shoes. Relationships change in a moment."
Finally, the actor expressed disillusionment with the younger generation, advising them, "My only advice to my younger siblings is to leave for abroad as soon as you get the chance. Build your own life. In this country, there is no greater sin than being an ordinary citizen."
