Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election candidate Mahin Sarkar, who announced his candidacy for the General Secretary (GS) position from an independent panel, has been expelled from the National Citizen Party (NCP) on charges of “serious breach of discipline.” The NCP stated that Mahin did not seek permission from the party’s convener, Nahid Islam, or member secretary, Akhtar Hossain, before declaring his candidacy.On Monday afternoon, Mahin Sarkar announced his candidacy for the GS post in the DUCSU election under the banner of an independent panel named “DU First.” Later that night, around 11 PM, the NCP issued a press release announcing his expulsion.
In the press release sent by NCP’s Joint Member Secretary (Office) Salehuddin Sifat, it was stated that Mahin Sarkar, a joint member secretary of the party, has been expelled from his position and responsibilities with immediate effect due to a serious violation of party discipline. The expulsion will remain in effect until further notice.
Around 1 AM, Salehuddin Sifat informed journalists that Mahin’s failure to obtain approval from the party’s convener and member secretary before filing his nomination for the DUCSU election was considered a serious breach of party discipline.
Mahin Sarkar was a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement during the July mass uprising. A section of the former coordinators formed a new student organization called the Democratic Students’ Parliament, which is contesting the DUCSU election under the panel named “Anti-Discrimination Students’ Parliament.”
Sources indicate that Mahin Sarkar had sought to contest for a top position in the “Anti-Discrimination Students’ Parliament” panel but failed to reach an agreement. As a result, he opted to run under a separate panel. However, the NCP supports the “Anti-Discrimination Students’ Parliament” panel. Party insiders revealed that Mahin’s candidacy for a top DUCSU post could split votes for the Anti-Discrimination panel, which led to his expulsion from the party.
