In response to the ongoing war in Gaza and the demand for the release of hostages, widespread protests have erupted across Israel, bringing the country to a standstill. Ordinary citizens have taken to the streets, blocking roads and disrupting traffic in various parts of the country.
For months, families of the hostages have been demanding their release, even calling for a complete ceasefire if necessary. However, the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, accused of war crimes, has instead planned to seize Gaza City earlier this month, ignoring these demands.
In response, hundreds of Israelis called for protests on August 17, resulting in massive demonstrations across the country.
According to *The Times of Israel*, at least 25 people were detained on Sunday morning for blocking roads and disrupting traffic. A law enforcement official stated that 11 individuals were arrested in Tel Aviv, Israel’s commercial capital, for disturbing public order and obstructing freedom of movement.
Police claim they have cleared protesters from most roads, restoring normal traffic flow on major highways. However, Route 16 in Jerusalem, a critical road leading to the city, remains blocked by demonstrators.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has expressed solidarity with the protesters, visiting the Hostage Square in Jerusalem to support their cause. Lapid emphasized that the hostages are not mere bargaining chips to be abandoned while the Israeli government continues the war. He demanded that the hostages be brought back from Gaza.
